For a move to be qualified for tax deduction (under Section 217 of the Internal Revenue Code), the time and distance tests must be met. The time test concerns the length of time the employer expects the employee to remain at the new job site (for tax exemption this must be at least 39 weeks). The distance test requires that the new workplace must be at least 50 miles farther from the old residence than the previous workplace.
